Cetacea: A Portrait of Whales (2025) - Naomi Bruhn
Cetacea: A Portrait of Whales (ca 7’) includes three movements:
Cetacean Prologue (ca 2.33’)
Clicks in the Abyss (ca 1.30’)
The Singing Voyager (ca 3’)
This digital download is:
Written for 4 flutes, alto and bass flute.
Includes the full score, parts, performance notes and programme notes.
1. Cetacean Prologue
The opening movement invites you into the underwater world of whales. Listen for the sounds of waves and the vastness of the ocean. It sets the stage for the journey to follow.
2. Clicks in the Abyss
This movement explores the world of the deep-diving sperm whale. It opens with rhythmic clicks — the sounds these whales use to navigate and hunt in complete darkness. The movement closes with a quiet requiem. This elegy is a response to the impact of human-generated sound pollution, which disrupts and endangers these deep-diving giants.
3. The Singing Voyager
This final movement focuses on the humpback whale, renowned for its haunting and complex songs. It begins with a solo flute performing a transcription of a whale’s song, accompanied by sounds of the ocean beneath. The piece closes with a duet, echoing the far-reaching songs of humpbacks as they travel across the seas.
